Adele Harrison and Altimira Middle Schools have been fortunate to have Katy Shetka, a true champion for its students. After an incredible 21-year tenure as the Mentor Site Facilitator, Katy is now preparing to retire, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and unwavering support for middle school-aged children. Throughout her journey, she has been a guiding light who has helped countless students navigate their journey. As we bid farewell to this extraordinary mentor facilitator, we want to reflect on the impact Katy has made and the invaluable lessons she has taught us all.
From the moment she began her work, Katy made it her mission to ensure that every child she interacted with was treated with love and care, as if they were her own. Having experienced the middle school years with her own children, Katy understood the complexities and emotional turbulence that students often face during this period. She recognized the importance of providing a safe and nurturing space where young individuals could freely express themselves and grow.
One of the greatest joys of Katy’s role has been “witnessing the transformation of students as they journeyed through middle school,” she explains. “Some of the students retreat into themselves, and it’s been amazing to watch them find the strength to break out of their shells and embrace the beauty of their unique personalities.”
Under Katy’s leadership, the mentor center at Adele Harrison Middle School became more than just a space for mentorship. It became a sanctuary for mentees and other children who needed a place to land. Katy’s kindness and compassion radiated through every interaction, creating an atmosphere of acceptance and support. She believes that every child, on their own, ‘is perfect, whole, and complete.’ By embracing this philosophy, Katy changed lives and instilled a newfound sense of confidence in the hearts of those she touched.
As Katy prepares to embark on her well-deserved retirement, the impact of her work will continue to reverberate throughout the Adele Harrison and Altimira communities. Her legacy will continue to shine bright, reminding us of the power of kindness, compassion, and the belief in every child’s potential. Thank you, Katy, for your remarkable dedication and the profound impact you have made on the lives of countless children.
