Celebrating Earth Day with the Sonoma Mentoring Alliance

This Earth Day, at the Mentoring Alliance, we’re reflecting on how our natural environment isn’t just a backdrop for activities, but a central character in the stories we create together. Our planned activities, whether it’s a day at the beach, a hike in the picturesque trails of Sugarloaf, or putting together pollinator packets (get yours from local Sonoma merchants), are more than just tasks; they’re catalysts for forging enduring bonds between mentors and mentees.

A shining example of these bonds is the journey of Itzel, who transformed from a mentee to a mentor of a student at Prestwood. Itzel’s initial reluctance during her first hiking experience, where she admittedly spent more time complaining than enjoying, slowly morphed into a deep-seated appreciation for the outdoors. This newfound love didn’t just stay with her; it spread to her family, culminating in shared family runs and hikes, strengthening their ties with each step and breath of fresh air.

Itzel’s story is a familiar narrative within our community, illustrating how a mentor’s gentle push to explore the outdoors can ignite a lasting passion for nature in our mentees. This Earth Day, we celebrated this spirit of connection and appreciation for our planet at the Fairmont Mission Inn with their second annual Earth Day Garden Workshop. The event was loved by both mentees and mentors, providing yet another venue for growth and learning.

As we look forward to more sunny days and shared adventures, we will continue to cherish and promote this mutual love for the great outdoors. Here’s to many more trails to explore and memories to make, outside!!

Happy Earth Day!
